Because Kyoto has a long history, there are some famous shops which have continued more than 100 years. When you walk around the town, you might come across valuable art handicrafts in shops of long standing. This time we walk the center of Kyoto city and find out the beauty of Kyoto which is woven by tradition and modern times.

1Uebaeso

The store specializes in paints for Japanese paintings, which has continued since the Edo period (17cent.~19cent.). The store invented nail polish called "nail" (manicure) using gofun which is a paint made from natural material.

2Takezasado

The shop's merchandise is colorful and popular as well as something like old-fasioned and giving you a soft impression. This old shop succeeds to the tradition of wood block print and adds modern sense. It is located on a narrow street.

3Eirakuya, Muromachi shop

The shop specializes in Japanese sweets and food boiled in sweetened soy sauce. The specialties are "A Bite of Shiitake Mushroom" which is made from carefully selected materials and seasoning and "Kohaku" (amber) which is a Japanese sweet with beautiful appearance like a gem. They represent Eirakuya.

4Umezono CAFE & GALLERY

The shop is a renovated café which was originally a traditional Kyoto house named "Umezono" (plum garden) and it has been famous for its skewered dumplings in the shape of a solid tube. You can enjoy eating pancakes with a taste of powdered green tea, French toast with brown sugar, and parfait with steamed wheat gluten. There is a gallery on the second floor displaying various interesting things.
